Social Activities

Chase Middle School holds a variety of activities for all students to participate in. Throughout the year, our students have the opportunity to attend four school dances. At the end of the year the eighth grade class has a final celebration for their middle school promotion. At this event, they have dinner provided and a slide show of their final year at Chase, as well as a DJ for dancing! There is also an annual skating party held at the beginning of the year. This year students will be participating in school spirit days. These will take place once a month and students are encouraged to wear school colors, purchase Cougar Paw tattoos to wear, and wear Chase t-shirts. Throughout the day, there will be drawings for door prizes for those who participate in the school spirit day.

School Plays

Every year the Oakland/North Topeka community is delighted to watch the Chase Middle School theatrical productions. Tryouts for the drama or musical begin in January. The production is open to the public and is usually presented at the beginning of March. All eligible students, including sixth graders, are invited to participate. There are many opportunities that don’t involve acting in case of stage fright! Students can volunteer their time to be a part of the stage crew and assist with props, scenery, or lighting and sound.

Music Performances

As a part of the music department’s curriculum, there are two concert performances, one in December and the other in May. The classes include chorus, band, and orchestra. Friends and family as well as community members are always invited to attend these spectacular performances.

Spelling Bee

This is an activity that allows students from all grade levels to participate. Before the actual Spelling Bee, there is a practice test given and those with high scores qualify for the county contest. The student who wins the county contest then goes on to the state contest, with the winner of that competition participating in the national contest in Washington D.C.

Sports

The sports programs at Chase Middle School are open to eligible seventh and eighth grade boys and girls. There are a variety of sports to participate in after school. Students can choose from basketball, tennis, football, volleyball, and track. Academic responsibility and sportsmanship are key issues when participating on a sports team. All families as well as students are welcome to attend games and events to support the Cougars! All events held outdoors are free of charge. The eighth grade students have Play Nights at the conclusion of their season(s). This event is held after school hours, usually around six in the evening. Play Nights provid more people the opportunity to support our students, especially if they cannot make it to regularly scheduled games that begin directly after the school day.

Hispanic Literacy Night

At Chase Middle School, we recognize the importance of working with students and their families to build home school connections that are proven to increase literacy. Chase hosts Hispanic Literacy nights that are designed especially for families of second language learners. These nights include helpful hints and tips to aid families and to insure that parents of these students are aware of the school’s expectations and opportunities. The Chase Hispanic Literacy Night Coordinator is Ms. Betty Cowen; she can be contacted via e-mail at bcowen@topeka.k12.ks.us.
